About us

The coastal zones of Brazil and the World are always in evidence due to their excessive occupation, pressured by the high volume of economic activity linked to the concentration of people in these regions. This condition has placed managers, researchers, scholars and the population living in these areas concerned about the excessive use of natural and environmental resources, and the style of development of these coastal regions and adjacent areas.

The management of coastal areas and resources requires a great deal of effort in choosing among the different paths to be examined in the decision-making process regarding one or the other style of development. Considering that decision-making is always difficult to achieve, since it involves choices of different dimensions (socioeconomic, political, environmental, cultural, religious, etc.), economic studies become necessary as tools for managers' decision-making of coastal areas.

In this context, the proposal of the Research Unit on Coastal Economy (UPEC) is to produce economic analyzes, studies and evaluations of the use of resources and development processes, to support decision-making with information derived from technical-scientific studies.

UPEC concentrates its studies in the economic area, contributing instruments and analyzes for a better management of coastal areas. The UPEC aims to work with the development of projects, research and studies in the large area of economics, with emphasis on environmental economics and natural resources, fishing economy, public policy, global changes and effect on coastal ecosystems.
